After the First Draft

Writing Cute FinIn the grand tradition of posting news about myself that chuckpalahniuk.net reported first: I’ve written an essay. Webmaster Dennis Widmyer is putting together a great resource for writers called… uh… The Writer’s Resource, and asked if I’d contribute something. So I wrote this piece about rewriting. If you’re a writer, you might find it interesting.

If you’re not, well… isn’t this picture of Fin cute?

I'd first heard of the fearless Max Barry via The Cult. Picked up Syrup, Jennifer Government, devoured both, read that article and signed up here soon after. I found it(the article) to be both comforting and helpful so thanks.

Finlay's a bundle of cuteness with a side serving of cute.

I showed this to my daughter Keren, and she very cleray stated "Baybee"! Then turned to Grandpa, pointed at Finlay and said "Du baybee!". I know you will be thrilled to share and be a part of my daughter's first sentence, as you eagerly await your own (assuming it hasn't happened already being a child prodigy and all...)

Keren turns 1 in a few weeks.

I got some value from the rest, but she got bored about three words in... :)

Even though I'm not an author of - what was it? - 90 000 words (and I thought that 50-page chem assignment was huge) I still found the article interesting.

And FIN IS DA CUTEST BABY EVER. Awwwwwwww ... just wish I could cuddle and coddle her. She is a very cuddleable baby, you know that? And those lashes! You're gonna be beating away those boys away soon, with those eyes. Wonder what her first word will be ...

CONTRAST?

Max, I love how you write to people of all intelligence levels. I mean, you have all of the stuff(for the smarter people) about writing in your blog; but for the people that aren't interested in writing, you put up a picture of fin for everyone to say "FIN IS DA CUTEST BABY EVER. Awwwwwwww ..."

PS FIN IS DA CUTEST BABY EVER. Awwwwwwwwww...

She's on eof those babies that looks like they're thinking something beyond your comprehension. Or, maybe she's wondering why the big people with the flash thing are making weird noises at her.

It was other Cult members who turned me on to this funny author, Max Barry. And the Cult workshop(s) have been the best of the online type I've found. Oh, and there's the Max Barry interview there, where I found out the reason other people hadn't read 'Syrup' is it's read exclusively by aspiring novelists...

Oh look, she has her Daddy's hair! I'm just kidding, Max. Thanks for the advice and keep up the great novels. And oh yeah, do you ever think you'll make it back to Chicago?

What he said. I'd also like to add that it would in no way end up on E-bay... the thought never even crossed my mind.
