Company in Hollywood and Oz

Company If you were wondering what that strange feeling you had recently was—a sensation like some great evil in the world had suddenly been put to rights—then I’m happy to explain: Company has got itself an Australian publication date.

About time, I know. It’s very weird to be published overseas but not at home. I wouldn’t mind if my book was completely ignored or flayed by critics, so long as people could at least find it in a bookshop. Well, I’d mind a little. No, you’re right, that would suck. But having Company unavailable in my home country really niggled at me this year. I’m very happy to be getting that fixed.

The details: it’ll be a A$29.95 paperback out March 2007 from Scribe Publications, available in Australia and New Zealand.

In film news, I spoke to Steve Pink recently—he’s the guy writing the Company screenplay. I gotta say, when the film rights sold to this book, I had no idea how it could be a movie. I mean, it was barely a novel. For me, it was more like colonic irrigation: by the end, I felt like I’d flushed out everything I had left to say about corporate life. But Steve described some scenes to me, and they sounded very funny. So now I’m intrigued.

Apparently if this film gets made, Jen and I get to fly first class to the premiere. Jen thinks this is the most exciting thing ever. Not the movie. The chance to fly first class.

You'd better check Fin also gets to travel first class to the premiere, or you'll be extremely unpopular!

Wow, Company was already picked up as a movie? That's really awesome.
Also, congratulations on the whole having your book in Australia thing. I'd be more excited, but I live in the United States. Sorry.
Well, now I'm off to battle the oppressive deadline of National Novel Writing Month. Wish me luck, for I don't expect to come out of the battle alive.

About friggin' time. Australian publishers are lame... i had to import via amazon.com. Meanwhile, I can't find Jennifer Government in bookstores anymore either, and i don't have my own copy.

I honestly am glad to hear your book will be available to be starred at in book stores and hopefully locals will continue the tradition of placing a few copies of the book in the front of the store.

Stupid publishers.

The movie deal sounds interesting, we should start a betting pool by a water cooler image on the webpage on which film gets picked up and released first out of your first 3 books (not including the one you set on fire).

That's cool that they're making it into a movie. I hope they don't screw it up. What about the other movie news?

Are you going to be travelling round Australia signing books? If so, don't forget Adelaide! I personally know at least 7 people who live in Adelaide and also read books. Please furnish us with dates and locations if extant.

Speaking of flying and all things from Australia and New Zealand I just finished Departure Lounge by Chad Taylor. Maybe you should take a read before the flight.

Oh wow, that writer wrote the screenplays for High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank? Very nice, two of my favorite movies... both with the same leading actor. Hmmmmm any chance John Cusack will star in Company as well? :D

Scribe eh? No luck with the ABC then? Funny, I thought after the JONESTOWN fiasco they'd be keen to pick up a nice bit of satire. Oh, that's right, they don't do satire at the ABC anymore either...

First class travel to the premiere of your first movie, that'd be great. If only actually getting a movie made was slightly more probable than winning the lottery you could become rather excited.

That's weird... I live in Canberra (Australia) and I was able to borrow Company from the library a couple of weeks ago. Either the library's getting some books from overseas, or advance copies or something, or else (more likely, really) something just plain strange is going on.

I enjoyed Company, by the way. Syrup is still my favurite, though.

The guy who is writing the Company screenplay also wrote the High Fidelity screen play which is an awesome movie with an even better book. But an awesome movie none the less, I'm sure he'll do a great job with Company.

I can't wait for the Max Barry-esque movies to be produced and such. I would be like first in line on opening night to see them.

Good news . . . but I don't know if I can wait that long. Might be a trip to Amazon for me

Congratulations, Max. It sounds like the movie will stay true to the book, which is good news.
